What a finish to what is one of the most memorable series in recent years. Chase Utley. How do you decide to pitch to Chase Utley in that spot?! Yeah J Roll has hurt them in the series but come on, it’s Chase Utley. HAHAHA. That move makes Willie Randolph look like… oh… never mind that. What a ride this group is going to take to Miami. Smiles all around.
I love the attitude of Jason Werth. He took the game by the balls. What was Wagner doing after he took second? What a play on Werth’s part. He gave the Phils that chance to win.
Can’t we find a way to keep Iguchi? Somehow, someway, can’t we find a spot for him?
I still have doubts. I doubt the pitching, and clutch play in the field at times, but no one can doubt the desire to win. Overcoming a bullpen meltdown like that one to hammer home the sweep. It is enough to make you think, for a night, that they can overcome all of the other obstacles.
Mets Quotes from the NY Daily News:
David Wright, in a shocked visitors clubhouse, said the Mets have to turn the page quickly - or else.
“We just can’t allow ourselves to hang our heads and feel sorry for ourselves because Atlanta will beat us all over the field if we do that,” Wright said. “We have to end this right now. Forget about it. Leave it out on the field.”
“He was rested,” Willie Randolph said about asking for a two-inning save from Wagner, who tossed 45 pitches, perhaps leaving Aaron Heilman as tonight’s closer should the Mets have a late lead in Atlanta. “Every once in a while we have the luxury when he hasn’t pitched to get him some extra work.
“He knew about that. He was ready for that. We took advantage of that. He was going through the meat of the lineup. That’s what he’s paid to do - to get the big boys. So it was set up perfectly for us. It’s just that they battled and got some fortunate hits. Outside the Burrell home run, everything else was pretty soft for the most part.”
Wagner (2-2), who has suffered three of his four blown saves since Aug.10, suggested he didn’t have advance knowledge he would be throwing two innings, but didn’t quibble with the decision. “It’s something I had to do,” he said. “It was a good decision. I should be able to do that.”
